“Vegan” is legally unregulated in most jurisdictions. A manufacturer can print it on a packet without a third-party audit. Certified Vegan is a registered trademark (Vegan Action, and separately BeVeg) that requires ingredient and sourcing checks. We never use “vegan-certified” as a shorthand for “we read the label.”

Status field (required on every product)

  • Certified Vegan — current third-party trademark, with a link to the certifying body. Only this row may mention the trademark.
  • Manufacturer-confirmed vegan — the brand says so on its site or in a direct reply. No independent audit.
  • Ingredient-list verified (by us) — we reviewed the listed ingredients and found nothing obviously animal-derived. Processing aids and cross-contamination are often undisclosed; this is not a certification.
  • Unclear — ambiguous sourcing (gelatin alternatives, amino acids, flavor lines that have used honey). We flag instead of guessing.
  • Not vegan — a known animal-derived ingredient such as honey, gelatin, dairy, or whey.

Every row shows last verified: month, year. The operating cadence is quarterly, because race-nutrition formulas change. Current catalog rows were last verified August 2026.

What the tools will not do

A language model is used to parse meal descriptions and write explanations. Fiber grams, carbohydrate totals, sodium, and vegan status are computed from the food and product tables. The model is not allowed to invent numbers or statuses, and it will never print Certified Vegan from a paste box.
