Is Tailwind Vegan? Endurance Fuel vs Rebuild
Tailwind Endurance Fuel is manufacturer-confirmed vegan. Tailwind Rebuild Recovery contains whey and is not vegan. Same brand, opposite statuses (August 2026).

Tailwind Endurance Fuel is manufacturer-confirmed vegan. Tailwind Rebuild is not. Rebuild contains whey. Last verified August 2026. Asking “is Tailwind vegan?” without the product name is how plant-based runners drink dairy at the finish tent.
Endurance Fuel still has to earn its place as carbohydrate plus sodium you have practised. Jeukendrup (2014) still sets 30–90 g/h during prolonged racing. A vegan label does not change the gut.
Two products, two statuses
| SKU | Job | Carbs | Sodium | Status (Aug 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Endurance Fuel | During | 25 g per labeled serving | 310 mg | Manufacturer-confirmed vegan |
| Endurance Fuel (caffeinated) | During | 25 g | 310 mg | Manufacturer-confirmed vegan (~35 mg caffeine) |
| Rebuild Recovery | After | 17 g | 210 mg | Not vegan (whey) |
Definitions: methodology. Catalog: gels, chews, and mixes.
Certified Vegan is a third-party trademark. Endurance Fuel is not filed at that level here. Manufacturer-confirmed means Tailwind states the endurance mix is vegan and gluten-free. Recheck the bag.
Using Endurance Fuel in a race
Labeled servings are 25 g of carbohydrate. Many bags use a two-scoop serving — count what you actually mix.
| Target | If the bottle is the only fuel | If you also take gels |
|---|---|---|
| 30 g/h | ~1 labeled serving plus a sip | Water in the bottle, gel on the belt |
| 60 g/h | ~2.4 labeled servings — a lot of fluid | One serving in the bottle + one 30 g gel, or Maurten Drink Mix 160 (40 g) + a small gel |
| 90 g/h | Usually a mix-plus-gel problem, not Tailwind alone | Gut-train first (gut training) |
Sodium at 310 mg per labeled serving is higher than Maurten Gel 100 (35 mg). Useful in heat if you have practised that salt load. Too much if you also drink a high-sodium mix and eat pretzels without a plan.
Caffeinated Endurance Fuel adds about 35 mg per labeled serving. That is a small bump compared with Maurten Gel 100 Caf 100 (100 mg). Still count the morning coffee (coffee before a marathon).
The Rebuild trap
Finish lines, track teams, and “Tailwind tent” tables often put Rebuild next to Endurance Fuel. Same palette. Whey is still whey.
Skratch runs the same split: Sport Hydration is manufacturer-confirmed vegan; Recovery is milk.
After a long run or marathon, use food or a plant protein. Garden of Life Sport plant protein is Certified Vegan in this catalog (reconfirm the logo on the lot). Vega Sport Premium Protein is manufacturer-confirmed, not Certified Vegan. Recipes: post-marathon recovery meal, long-run smoothie.
Ivy et al. (2002) is about carbohydrate plus protein after exercise — not a reason to drink whey.
Aid stations and group runs
If a bottle on the course is “Tailwind,” ask which bag. If nobody knows, drink water and use your own flask (aid-station guide).
Do not assume every white powder in a Tailwind-branded scoop is Endurance Fuel. Rebuild is the recovery canister.
Scoop count is the vegan-status’s unglamorous twin
The catalog lists 25 g of carbohydrate per labeled serving. Tailwind bags often define that serving as two scoops. If you dump “a scoop” into a 500 ml bottle at a hotel sink, you do not know whether you mixed 12 g or 25 g.
Fix the ratio at home. Write it on the flask: scoops and millilitres. Race morning copies that. A stronger mix is a different osmotic load (de Oliveira et al., 2014 still list concentrated carbohydrate as a GI risk). Status-checked powder mixed twice as strong is still a gut-training problem.
Caffeinated Endurance Fuel is a separate bag at about 35 mg caffeine per labeled serving. Keep it physically apart from the plain bag. Stacking two caffeinated servings plus coffee is how people overshoot without meaning to (coffee before a marathon).
Endurance Fuel vs Maurten 160 vs Skratch Sport Hydration
Same job family — carbohydrate in a bottle — different numbers. Last verified August 2026. All three endurance mixes below are manufacturer-confirmed vegan, not Certified Vegan.
| Mix | Carbs / labeled serving | Sodium | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tailwind Endurance Fuel | 25 g | 310 mg | You want a drink-mix-first plan and have practised the scoop |
| Maurten Drink Mix 160 | 40 g | 160 mg | You want more carb per bottle and will get salt elsewhere |
| Skratch Sport Hydration | 21 g | 380 mg | You want more sodium than Maurten and some carb |
| Skratch Super High-Carb | 100 g | 400 mg | You have trained drinking most of an hour from one serving |
Skratch Recovery is still dairy. Do not read this table as “Skratch is vegan.” Brand comparison: Maurten, GU, and Skratch. Drink-mix jobs: vegan electrolyte drink mixes.
Two bottles of Tailwind at 25 g each is 50 g — most of a 60 g/h hour if you actually finish them. Adding two gels on top without subtracting is how the hour becomes 100 g untested.
After the run, without Rebuild
Ivy et al. (2002) still supports carbohydrate plus protein after hard work. The vegan version is food, or a plant powder with a real status.
- Immediate: long-run smoothie (soy, banana, maple).
- Marathon chute: post-marathon recovery meal (soy plus silken tofu).
- Powder: Garden of Life Sport is Certified Vegan in this catalog (reconfirm the lot). Vega Sport Premium Protein and Orgain are manufacturer-confirmed. Details: dairy-free recovery protein.
